Gilroy, El Paso, and Dayton have all suffered through tragic shootings in a few days.  Mass shootings have become a nationwide epidemic that have left people terrified for their safety. According to Time Magazine, 62 people have been killed in mass shootings in the United States in only nine months into 2019. Citizens all across the United States are grieving over the staggering loss and pleading for change. In the wake of these events, police departments are bulking up on active shooter preparedness. One of them being the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department right here in Malibu.

According to 90265malibu.org, The Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department are now doing all they can to keep Malibu’s Annual Chili Cook Off secure. Besides conducting active shooter drills, Captain Chuck Becerra has promised to double the man power to ensure a feeling of safety. Large gatherings are often a prime target for an active shooter and the Malibu Chilli Cook Off is expecting the massive amount of crowds they attract every year. With twice the amount of police protection this year, the Chili Cook Off will be in good hands. As well as the noticeable growth of uniformed officers surrounding the Cook Off, an additional security measure will also be put in place. This one, however, will remain unseen. This security measures will not only be in effect for the Malibu Chili Cook Off, but for other highly anticipated Malibu events.  Captain Chuck Becerra has said “ My daughters will be attending the festivities on both days and I want the members of the community to feel as confident as I am about attending these types of events.” The Malibu Chili Cook Off will begin on August 30th at Malibu Civic Center Way. MM
