The annual Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering kicked off Saturday 14th at Malibu Bluffs Park. The celebration brought together members of the Chumash tribe, native to Malibu, along with other nearby tribes and spectators to join in festivities such as singing, dancing and socializing. The free two-day event commenced on Saturday with the Grand Entry ( rst dance), which was led by a tribal elder carrying the traditional Eagle Staff. Danc- ers decked in brightly-colored gowns and headwear moved to the sounds of rhythmic drumbeats. Native American Vendors sold everything from intricate handcrafted dream catchers, and woven blankets to beaded jewelry and t-shirts. The city provided shuttles for the crowds to access the event from the civic center parking area. The event was the perfect way for Malibuites to get together and celebrate Chumash heritage and Earth Day. MM
