The Underwater Project

Instead of giving up and going home when there are no waves, surfer and documentary photographer Mark Tipple trades his surfboard for his camera and hops in to take advantage of the waves – underwater.

Tipple lies in wait beneath the swells in pursuit of a photo that captures the oft-unseen goings-on underwater.  While he started out just trying to take interesting, unique pictures of the ocean, his project evolved into a case study on surfers, swimmers, and other ocean-goers and their interactions with the sea beneath the surface.

While Tipple’s work provides a unique insight into beachgoers’ relationships with the ocean, his photos are worth looking at if only to appreciate the hidden beauty and untamed nature of the water that he brings to the surface.
