For her very first solo exhibition in the United States, world-renowned Dublin-based artist Jesse Jones presents a new project titled “The Struggle Against Ourselves.”
Like many of her films, Jones’ newest film focuses on the political and social history of cinema, while also exploring the role film has as a cultural artifact within history. In collaboration with CalArts’ Schools of Film/Video and Theater and LA theater director Chi-wang Yang, “The Struggle Against Ourselves” emphasizes collective human form and synchronicity of movement by bringing together Russian revolutionary art and American pop culture. Jones uses the late Russian theater director Vsevolod Meyerhold’s biomechanics knowledge to kick off her project. In Jones’ pursuit to retrieve the artifacts of culture history and politics, she uses performance, film re-enactment and theatrical staging to revolutionize and give a deeper meaning to her film.
“The Struggle Against Ourselves” will be displayed at Los Angeles’ REDCAT from July 1 to Aug. 28.
