“Roll on, deep and dark blue ocean, roll. Ten thousand fleets sweep over thee in vain. Man marks the Earth with ruin, but his control stops with the shore.”
—Lord Byron
The worldwide oceanic preservation movement is a perpetual struggle of Biblical proportions. In an attempt to augment that prodigious battle, we’ve created The Blue Project, a celebration of environmental activism featuring local athletes, entertainers, and entrepreneurs alongside ocean-based charities and non-profit organizations—each promoting to the general health and majestic beauty of mother ocean.

WHO: Pierce Brosnan, Actor/Humanitarian
ORGANIZATION: International Fund For Animal Welfare
“What angers me about whaling? There is no economic justification for it, no scientific justification for it, and there is no moral justification for it. It shouldn’t happen. It is a heinous act that I have fought against for almost 15 years. The senseless slaughter of whales and dolphins is utterly shocking.”
ABOUT: The IFAW started four decades ago as a small group of concerned citizens trying to protect white coat harp seals from being brutally slaughtered for their pelts and has now grown into one of the world’s leading animal welfare organizations. Consisting of teams of scientists, legal and political experts and dedicated campaigners, the IFAW now garners 1.2 million supporters worldwide and holds steady with its mission “to create a better world for animals.”
Take a stand. Stop the bloodbath.

WHO: Brandon Boyd, Musician
ORGANIZATION: Surfrider Foundation
“What angers me the most is the apathy we tend to have in the face of horrific oceanic conditions. I consider myself a surfer with a conscience, and I try to do my best to give back and protect the resource that has given me so much throughout my entire life.”
ABOUT: If you are ditching work so you don’t miss the incoming swell, you probably are sharing waves with members of the Surfrider Foundation. Fifty thousand members strong and growing, Surfrider is all about protecting what you love most: the waves, beaches and oceans that we hold so dear. Surfrider is an international nonprofit organization winning one victory after another through conservation, activism, research and education.
Spread the word and challenge our leaders to tell the truth.

WHO: Anna Cummins, environmentalist
ORGANIZATION: 5 Gyres
“I’ve personally seen plastic in three of the world’s oceans, and I resolve to do my part to keep it out. Our consumer habits here on land have far-reaching impacts on the rest of the world, and we have a small window of time to turn things around.”
ABOUT: Humans seem to be trying their hardest to destroy the ocean’s ecosystem with the staggering amount of plastic trash “patches” that are accumulating in our five ocean gyres. Around the world, plastic pollution has become a growing plague, clogging waterways, damaging marine ecosystems and entering the marine food web, becoming a hazard for marine wildlife — and ultimately for us. 5 Gyres is an organization dedicated to tackling this global problem through exploration, education and action.

These 3 people you have selected are the best of the best when it comes to speaking up for the health and well-being of the marine environment. Yes-there are pockets of resistance re the practice of whaling and culling of mammals but humanity has come such a long way in realizing the atrocity of it all. Hopefully-in our lifetimes, this abomination will be globally outlawed. Brandon Boyd is a great spokesperson for Surfrider-he and his band have won Surfrider awards and they put their money where their mouths (mostly) are with their Make Yourself Foundation. Have not yet heard of the 5 Gyres and Anna Cummins but what she says about plastics pollution is right on.
One day very soon-hopefully those plastic bags they pass out like candy at the supermarket will become outlawed and effective outreach such as Surfrider’s “Just Say No to Plastics” campaign will increase awareness of plastic pollution in much the say way the MADD organization made people realize the foibles of drinking & driving! Thank you for these 3 Trail-blazers and their stories.

Mr. Boyd has proven he is dedicated to ocean preservation, however after reading comments from Ms. Cummins past, she seems to have a great deal of personal gain from her actions.

I hope everyone would use common sense and try to do the right thing. Clean up after yourselves..Don’t use items harmful to the environment whether it be land or sea. I personally don’t live near the ocean but if I were to visit there I would want to know it is safe and clean. Just as when I’m looking across the plains I want to see beauty not garbage and pollution. Thank you to the people who keep trying to remind and inform everyone that we could be losing precious things. I watched a movie called The Cove..it’s a real eye opener.

can anyone think of a reason why “the world coming together” could pose a problem? not just a benefit? ...just curious

I back Brandon people are apathetic when it comes to the conditions of our oceans. Protect our oceans and beaches
Respect and light to Brandon

When we realize that the ocean runs in our veins, the ground is our skin, the fish in the ocean are our vital organs, etc. we will stop hurting ourselves. Killing and not caring about nature, we do the same to ourselves. Let’s start and continuing to heal the damage. We can do this together. Do your part, love yourself. Respect life, before we lose it. I love you all.

No gain comes from destruction… Be part of a solution not the problem. Earth’s ocean covers more than 70% of our planet’s surface, but the Ocean’s pollution has escalated dramatically as those who use the oceans for recreational and commercial purposes, as well as those who live nearby, have disposed of more and more wastes. Very sad…

This is great…Great for them. Although I am skeptic about everything said and their pro-activism. They may be really supportive about one issue, i am sure but they lack on others. We will never be on the same page. Sorry.

I am very happy that there are people in this world who care enough to try to make a difference. With all of the people trying to do something in their own way its going to help make this world a better place.

My two cents: I am hopeful that with awareness people everywhere will cease to tolerate the plundering and poluting of land and water. As the world’s population increases more pressure will be put on the earth and oceans’ resources. I must be optimistic that environmentally conscious changes put into place now will continue to evolve. Surely it is in everyone’s best interest that air is fit to breathe and water to drink even in places with despotic rulers.
, North Korea comes to mind. I was watching a documentary on North Korea and apparently the indigenous wild bird species don’t exist in that country because people have killed them off for food. Birds don’t sing there, there aren’t any.
As plant and animal species decline we risk becoming very lonely and desolate at the top of the food chain. The generations alive today can begin the reversal of so much human damage wreaked upon the earth. What will we, as individuals, do today to become the change we wish to see in the world? Our personal choices can make a difference.
