Sh*t My Dad Says

By: Chelsea Midgette | June 16, 2010 |

We all have those moments – when someone in the family makes a comment so outrageous, you wish someone else could’ve heard it just so they’d know what you have to deal with at home.  Justin Halpern’s life is chock-full of those moments, and, thankfully, he’s made them available so we can all see what he’s dealing with – and be thankful we got off easy.

The phenomenon started when Justin posted one of his dad’s matter-of-fact comments on Twitter, and his friends told him that it was funny and he should keep posting.  Hundreds of posts and hundreds of thousands of new Twitter followers later, Justin’s dad had become an internet celebrity, while Justin’s Twitter feed – appropriately titled “sh”tmydadsays” – had drawn the attention of major media outlets and garnered Halpern a book deal.

While the Twitter feed can be exceedingly vulgar and foul-mouthed, the book version brings the laughs and, surprisingly, sentimentality.  Sh*t My Dad Says, which was released on May 4 this year, includes some of Justin’s dad’s most memorable quotes, along with stories that capture the curmudgeonly man’s unique views on life and the deep love for his son that lies beneath his crusty, outspoken exterior.

Hilarious, entertaining, shocking, and touching, Justin Halpern’s debut makes for a great summer read while evoking a little nostalgia for the advice our own dads give us – though maybe not in quite so many words.

Can’t wait to read it!!! I probably never would have picked it up if not for your review, Chels.

My daughters gave me this book for father’s day based on your review.  I loved it - everyone in the family has read it by now.
