Despite the New York weather that unmistakably pointed to a fall of cozy sweaters and boots to brave the elements, there is no doubt that the spirit of spring was in the air at the New York Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Week. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (September 9 - 16th) brought the usual flock of celebrities, editors, bloggers and fashionistas to New York City to experience firsthand the styles to be seen in the upcoming Spring/Summer 2011 collections. Excitement was in the air, along with the hint of freshness and optimism that comes with the spring season as industry insiders and fashion enthusiasts, decked out in their designer everything, flocked to the new location of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at the Lincoln Center. This year, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week also coincided with the famed nightly event Fashion’s Night Out, which brought even more style and hype to the week.

Though the various collections exhibited for S/S2011 were nothing short of awe-inspiring, other exciting landmark events in the fashion world gave attendees lots to talk about. With Mayor Bloomberg declaring NYC the fashion capital (and accordingly naming a temporary “fashion line” on the subway), and Diane Von Furstenberg announcing her support for a new Fashion Law program at the Fordham University campus a few steps from the runway, exciting things were underway in the dynamic world fashion in New York.

On the runway, overall, obvious points were made towards clean, light, colorful tones and designs that are associated with moods of spring. Away from the strict adherence to beiges, “greiges”, and whites that largely comprised the F/W2010 lines, one could extract from the shows that spring will keep the neutrals, but pepper them with colors to complement and liven them up. Splashes and details of red, orange and gold effected a vibe that often seemed rather Seventies-inspired, but with a fresh energy ready to welcome a warm spring season. Other lines shown exhibited more minimalist vibes. Betsey Johnson and Custo Barcelona aside, sparkles, fringes, and tulle were kept to a minimum, keeping in accordance with the current move towards cleaner lines and more conservative tones.
