
In what is seen as a way to continue to compete with other mainstream companies like Apple and Google, Microsoft has bought the popular video and messaging company, Skype, for $8.5 billion in cash today. Since Skype’s launch in 2003, it has gone through its fair share of ups and downs in regards to buying or selling the company to other larger companies like Ebay. Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, says on its union with Skype: “Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people around the world. Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world.”
