Walk us through your most colorful childhood memory.
My most colorful childhood memory comes from the time when my family and I lived in a cute little house on the cliffs of Malibu, where I was born. It was summer, and we were in our back yard swimming in our portable pool, looking at the ocean. My parents and my sister had friends over. Since I was only 5, they (and our dog Laz) were my friends, too. We were listening to Fleetwood Mac, playing in the yard and turning into tan little toe heads under the sun. I will always remember that day. It’s a reminder of what fun, family, summertime and good music are all about and the person you grow up to be because of it!
What is the strangest number you have programmed into your phone?
“john freeway san diego.”
Describe your closest brush with death.
When I was 10 or so, I was river rafting on the Kern River with my family, and our raft got tipped over by the rapids. We all went rushing down the river, swallowing water as we bounced over rocks the entire time. Luckily, I am a really good swimmer and got myself to shore after a little bit of fighting the current. My sister and her friend had to get rescued by men with ropes who pulled them in to shore! It was so scary at the time, but then after we were all safe, I thought it was kind of fun!
If you could choose any five people, dead or alive, to have dinner with, who would they be and why?
How bout my top 3?
My Nana: I wish I would have been old enough to have a real conversation with her, but I was too young. She was born in 1902. I’d like to ask her about how her life was growing up, what she has learned and what advice she could give me. She’d probably tell me to never take anything or myself too seriously, to never regret anything, and to do things and be around people that make me happy.
Lauryn Hill: I’d love to meet her and hear her sing right there in front of me! She’s my all-time favorite singer in the world! I’d love to have her give me a vocal lesson!
Leonardo DiCaprio: Because I kind of adore him! I also think he is a great actor, a very smart man, and I would love for him to teach me more ways to be green and help our planet!
What do you consider your greatest failure?
Not turning the car around the day I left for tour last year. I wanted to go back and take a family picture with my parents, my sister and our three dogs, but I was running late to the airport. Two of my dogs passed away a month after I left. I was heartbroken and never forgave myself for that. But it has taught me to never take anything for granted.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Walking up on stage every night and singing to thousands of people even though I am terrified of it! The more I get used to it, the better I feel inside, and I know that I have conquered my fear!
What is your most cherished possession and why?
My laptop. I have all of my pictures I’ve taken over the years on it, unfinished songs, so many memories that are important to me, and I would be so bummed if I had to live without them.
How will you spend this evening?
I was in the studio finishing my record with my dad. Then I went to Hotel Cafe in Hollywood to listen to a new artist that’s just starting out; her name is Lindsay Ray. It was inspiring. Then I went home, and my dad and I played my mom the new songs we just recorded, and I danced with our dog Roxy! We had fun! Now I am writing to you and then I’m off to get some sleep!
Describe a vivid or recurring dream you’ve had?
I don’t remember my dreams most of the time, but I do like to make myself go back to sleep to finish a good dream if I wake up in the middle of one. I start directing it as if I’m making a movie.
How would you define love?
Love is something we can’t live without no matter how hard some of us try. We breathe because of it. We laugh and we cry because of it. We feel things and live because of it. It fills our chests with warmth and our cheeks with smiles. It is something shared and admired. Love is feeling safe, comfortable, happy.
