California’s Kindred Spirits, Snoop and Willie

By: Samantha LaBue | June 28, 2011 | Music

Who can forget California’s most unabashedly troublesome duos? Sonny and Cher. Tommy Lee and Pam. Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson? That’s right, if you hadn’t already heard Willie and Snoop are close pals. One’s a little bit country and the other’s a little bit hip hop, but their love of music and rebellion and a similar artistic aesthetic have resulted in a companionship worthy of interest from fans and spectators. The odd couple has caught the eye of R&R, an artistic network based in downtown LA. In fact, now through July 8th the group will feature an art tribute to the two modern American legends.

The group show appropriately titled Willie & Snoop, open June 24th, features tribute pieces from a group of 38 artists including Chris Pastras, Carly Ealey, and Mr Frivolous. The musicians are showcased in a variety of styles from traditional portraits to abstract prints and representational photography.  It may seem like a strange idea, but the show follows R&R’s surprisingly popular exhibition dedicated to cheese, proving that art really has no wrong answers and neither does friendship. In the words of Snoop Dogg himself, “If you’ve got a problem with Willie Nelson, you’ve got a problem with me.”
