ART BREAKS WAVES

By: Editor | August 13, 2009 | Art Lifestyle Local

ART BREAKS WAVES is a bi-monthly exhibition series created and curated by Karla Braun for Malibu Market and Design. The concept for this series manifested from a desire to redefine the static and sterile confines of a typical gallery by presenting various mediums of fine art in unexpected ways.  ART BREAKS WAVES will exhibit painters, photographers, sculptors, as well as visual and industrial designers, displaying the exhibited artists across a landscape of internal and external spaces.

Malibu Market and Design is a multi-tiered estate showcasing high-end contemporary design, from furniture to landscape architecture. The grounds span from a small boutique at the edge of the Pacific Coast Highway all the way up a hillside overlooking the ocean. Malibu Market and Design’s multiple structures and creative spaces invoke a natural curiosity that inspires viewers to independently explore and discover art through movement.

ART BREAKS WAVES launches in August with photography exhibition Dreaming Awake, featuring photographs by renowned German artist Stefanie Schneider.

The opening event will be hosted by Malibu Magazine on August 29, 2009 at Malibu Market and Design | 25001 Pacific Coast Highway | Malibu, CA 90265

ARTIST BIO | ABOUT STEFANIE SCHNEIDER

Stefanie Schneider’s scintillating situations take place in the American West. Situated on the verge of an elusive super-reality, her photographic sequences provide the ambience for loosely woven story lines and a cast of phantasmic characters.

Schneider works with the largely uncontrollable chemical mutations of expired Polaroid film stock. Chemical explosions of color spreading across the surfaces undermine the photograph’s commitment to reality and induce her characters into trance-like dreamscapes. Like flickering sequences of old road movies Schneider’s images seem to evaporate before conclusions can be made - their ephemeral reality manifesting in subtle gestures and mysterious motives. Schneider’s images refuse to succumb to reality; they keep alive the confusions of dream, desire, fact, and fiction.

Stefanie Schneider received her MFA in Communication Design at the Folkwang Schule Essen, Germany. She lives and works in Los Angeles and Berlin. Her work has been shown at the Museum for Photography, Braunschweig, Museum fur Kommunikation, Berlin, the Institute fur Neue Medien, Frankfurt, the Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden, Kunstverein Bielefeld, Museum fur Moderne Kunst Passau, Les Rencontres d’Arles.

QUOTES ABOUT HER PHOTOS:

“They reinforce the randomness of life: the frisson that happens when you pass by someone you may have met in a dream; the way relationships begin and end and the way they occasionally, miraculously, work out. The skittish, disjointed nature of Schneider’s three pieces is out of our hands. She suggests that all we can do is point out this basic truth, marvel at our brain’s architecture, revel in the found beauty… We can gawk at the Polaroid’s chemical burns that resemble starbursts in the day sky in the same way we can acknowledge without understanding someone’s fleeting interest in a stranger. In other words, we can relate.
—James Scarborough, Frieze Magazine

“I never remember the details of a Stefanie Schneider image, just the whole. She treads a third path between reality and dream that connect the two and truly sparks my artistic, visual freedom.”—- Marc Forster, Director

“Stefanie Schneider’s color prints—blow ups from standard Polaroids—are all-American in a troubling way. Her images read like frames from narratives we never get…Instead of a clearly delineated story, Schneider offers intimations, a suggestive lack of specificity reinforced by the prematurely aged look achieved by using long-expired Polaroid stock…You pick the sound track to play in your head. The number of possible endings to these stories is endless.”

I really like the mood captured in these photos. With all those imperfection and distortions on top, it gives me a feeling of nostalgia and dream-like impressions.

When you are in love you can’t fall asleep because reality is better than your dreams.

I do dream about art, and images come to me in dreams. I am definitely hoping to be in touch with my subconscious. I expect a call any minute.

The average is what makes the world - the exceptional is what gives it worth ... (o.wilde) Stefanies work is more than worth to see if you are looking for something beyond reality and i can’t explain it better than with Oscars words. I am delighted to be on my way to California to see the show! Thank you Karla & thank you Stefanie!

I have been following this photographer’s work for sometime and her eye is so surprising, it blurs the harsh lines of reality in every photo… Fantastic.. Can’t wait to see this batch.
