LACMA’s Costume Council presents Savage Beauty, an exhibition on the late Alexander McQueen. Andrew Bolton, curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institution will contribute commentary to the innovative and multi-layered man behind the designs who integrated creative brilliance with technical prowess.
McQueen, born to a taxi driver and a social science teacher, had humble beginnings as one of six children. His start in fashion began at a young age making dresses for his three sisters. Since then he has worked as chief designer of Givenchy from 1996 to 2001 and founded his own label under the name Alexander McQueen. He is famed for his ability to imbue a mixture of fragility and strength in his collections as well as for his lavish, provocative fashion shows.
The exhibition celebrates the late McQueen’s remarkable contributions to fashion from his Central Saint Martins postgraduate collection of 1992 to his posthumous final runway presentation. Approximately one hundred ensembles and seventy accessories from McQueen’s nineteen-year career will be on view.
