Legendary Italian actress Sophia Loren will be the guest of honor of a gala evening sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on May 4. The ceremony will take place at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills and will feature clips from the actress’ most celebrated films, as well as a personal appearance by Loren herself.
Sophia Loren won the first Academy Award for a non-English leading role in 1961 for “Two Women”, directed by Vittorio De Sica. Her collaboration with the neorealist filmmaker earned her another Best Actress nomination for her performance in “Marriage in Style”, opposite longtime co-star Marcello Mastroianni. An acclaimed actress in anything from drama to comedy to romance and a world-famous sex symbol, Loren starred alongside Hollywood’s leading men, including Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Gregory Peck, and Marlon Brando. In 1990, she was presented with an Honorary Academy Award for being “one of the genuine treasures of world cinema”.
